Intercultural Identity and Multiculturalism

Explore Intercultural Identity and Multiculturalism Through the Art of Tattooing

The theme of my research creation is to explore how people who have an intercultural identity, such of immigrants and children of immigrants, feel about their cultural identity in our multicultural society. To be specific, I want to question the reality of intergrading into a multicultural society in comparison to the expectation through the interviewees’ personal experiences. Does having an intercultural identity mean that one must fully understand and embrace their own heritage? Or does it mean to participate and intergrade into Westernized society while disregarding a part of your own identity? Which aspects of the culture do people connect with the most? Through my research-creation project, I wish to seek out interviewees from ethnocultural groups, and who also identify themselves as intercultural to answer these questions with me. I also want to understand their thoughts on their personal identity as a member of minority groups, living in a multicultural society like Canada. The end result of this project is to create unique tattoo designs that will honor the selected interviewees’ intercultural identities.
