There’s Something in the Water

Nat Torre
Nat Torre is a digital artist interested in making art informed by sociology research. They like to explore concepts like the future form of humanity, the use of monsters as metaphor, and the line between the real and the surreal. Usually, regardless of what is involved, they try to tell a story with the art they make.

There’s Something in the Water

Two hundred or so years in the future, two young history majors named Franco and Anya venture to Ketamaia, one of the many new planets that humans have negotiated a space to live on, so that Franco can audition for their dream role. They’re both somewhat awkward, but that’s okay. The times are strange, as people more and more are re-evaluating what it means for something to be “natural”.

This a prototype for a utopia, guided by the methodology of Ruth Levitas – The Imaginary Reconstitution of Society (IROS). The narrative text linked below is an unfinished (and at the moment, really rough) attempt at bringing the utopian world to life in a literary context.

Of interest to me was a look into the somewhat obscure relationship between ecology and genderqueerness. As preliminary research, I looked into literary analysis of fiction with queer themes from an environmentally-conscious perspectives and used these as a starting point to identify connections between environmental injustice, queer identity, class struggle, race and other factors. Doing this helped guide my writing process thematically in order to produce a utopia in which ecological problems are tackled from an angle that may not have been as readily explored. Other sources were consulted in addition to inform the writing further.
