Make them fun

Jason Hilani
Jason is currently studying Computer Science and Computation Arts in University. While technically doing a bachelor’s in fine arts, he generally focuses on the more technical aspects of Computation Arts and video game design. He hopes to eventually acquire enough technical knowledge to be able to fully be able to work on the foundation of a video game, as well as enough artistic and musical knowledge to be able to come up with concepts and communicate them with artists and composers.

Make them fun

The goal is to research on what constitutes as good controls, as well as how much impact they have on the player’s enjoyment of a game. Since Triple A games tend to avoid innovation and focus on safer designs, there may be fixed ideas on what constitutes as good controls. As such, whenever the controls don’t perform the way that is generally expected of Triple A games, they tend to be considered as bad controls. However, there are times when things not working well end up making the game a lot more fun (although they may still be referred to as bad).

This research creation will attempt to explore controls that would generally seem obtuse or bad in the context of a Triple A game and find a way to make them fun. To do so, this research will be experimenting with the factors presented on the 3 diagrams. That is the character and gameplay; the controller; as well as the level design.
