Serragrist

Sol Paul
Sol P. is a Canadian artist residing in Montreal. Studying 4th year computation arts a Concordia university, a theoretical, design & interaction based approach has helped developed artistic expression, techniques and understandings. Primarily focusing on motifs of anti-information, over-stimulation, destruction and glitch. Seeking to describe tangible life in digital space, as an expression of a life inextricably linked to the internet. Their discipline includes analog arts, using this through processes of digitization. This includes, but is not limited to real-time photo/music/video, drawing, 3d animation & interactive websites practices.

Serragrist

Serragrist takes an input audio file and allows you to generate a plethora of new textures with granulation with delay & feedback. Serragrist comes from the words serrated and grist. Serrated being the toothed-edge of a saw-shape the sound has as a result of the processing in Pure Data. Grist is the processing which means forming the basis of an analysis as well as the a grain for grinding. The examples use a different reverb effect and panning as the program only produces monophonic audio at the moment.

The goal of this project is to re-appropriate sound materials that are over-abundant in online spaces. Using glitch and other non-conventional electronic aesthetics, the original meaning of the sound is mostly altered. This seeks to address an extremely consumerist approach to sound data. It is also a musical instrument, in which I use a MIDI pad to control. Is solely working with copy-written material, but altering gravely still stealing? This expression allows shredding and full-control of audio. To take this further I used one of my first beats made in FL Studio around 4 years ago. Completely re-working a 30 second loop into something much more realized.
