Lilia Isabel Aguirre Lugo
Hello! My name is Lilia Isabel Aguirre Lugo, and I am a Montreal based artist with a passion for animation and particularly character design. My love for animation started at childhood since, like most children, I grew up watching them, but my interest started in high school when I noticed that these fictional worlds were reflecting real-life and telling the stories of real people but presenting them in a way children can understand. I found that really inspiring and I hope to someday be able to make animated movies that share the stories of underrepresented groups in our society. I am currently a 3rd year student at Concordia enrolled in the Computation Arts program and although my passion lies in animation, I am currently curious about 3D modelling and game design, and I am taking this opportunity to learn as much as I can about those topics and other forms of digital media.

For my research-creation assignment, I explored the relationship between shape and colour and how people’s perspectives can be affected by them. To do this, I did research on color theory and shape theory and conducted interviews to find out what are the most common characteristic that are given to certain colours and shapes. With this information, I made an animated video which portrays three different scenarios in which the colours, shapes, and animation conflict with each others preconceived characteristics. The first depicts floating bright-pink squares on an electric-green background. Squares are usually seen as solid and rigid, so I made them float and because they are floating slowly, the colours I chose are very bright and associated with energy. The second depicts cherry-pink circles falling at a fast speed, sticking onto a cyan floor and each other in front of a lavender-purple background. I saw that circles are associated with being light and bouncy, so I made them heavy and rigid and, to contrast that animation, I used colors associated with relaxation and softness. Finally, the third depicts dark-blue triangles bouncing within the screen in front of an indigo background. Because triangles are commonly perceived as sharp and dangerous, I wanted to make seem squishy, hence making them bounce, and because the bouncing is very dynamic, I chose dark colors that portrayed seriousness to contrast the animation. Overall, my goal with my art piece is to find out how people perceive these different animations and see if they were mostly affected by the choice of colour, of the shape or maybe the animation.
